Auer (pronouced "our") is a family name.  Johann (John) Auer was an immigrant to Canada in the early 1930's.  Originally he worked as a farmer, then a coal miner in Drumheller, Alberta.   The first home he built for his family was located near the mine.  His only daughter, Lorraine, who was ?at the time recalls later conversations where they talked about measuring the furniture first and building the house just big enough to make it all fit.  After an injury  in the mine in 1943, they had several transition years that involved medical procedures, moves and and a variety of jobs and business ventures to provide for his family. In 1950 they finally settled in Calgary, Alberta. Along the way he renovated one home and also helped neighbours build and renovate. He was a skilled carpenter who spent his later years  working in maintenance at the General Hospital and during those years also built two homes in Calgary. The first  was just outside of the south city limits on 50th Ave and 4th Street SW.  Where Chinook Centre is now, there was a driving range and drive in theatre.  3 years later they built a house in the northeast community of Renfrew.  This home had a basement suite. 

With all the conversation these days about "Affordable Housing" they captured the essence of it - because of the economic times and their life journey.  The first house was just big enough, the second they kept as a rental income property and the last included a basement suite, which helped others out and also provided extra income for their own family.
